Schools row erupts in Ardoyne again

Loyalists have again blocked Catholic parents from taking their children to school in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.

Loyalists have again blocked Catholic parents from taking their children to school in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.

The RUC kept both sides apart after a night of rioting between nationalists and loyalists which left 39 officers injured.

The first mother arrived at the Holy Cross Girls’ school just before 9am this morning where she was greeted by a row of RUC officers in full riot gear and a group of jeering loyalists.

She remonstrated with police blocking the road, claiming her daughter’s civil rights to education were being denied.

Loyalists cheered as she was turned away.

It is understood loyalist leaders offered a compromise last night, allowing parents of children to take them to school along one side of the road only.

The nationalist response was that no one had told them which side of the road to use.

PUP spokesman Billy Hutchinson denied that the clash was over education and accused nationalists of rejecting the compromise.
