French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde is the odds-on favourite to become the next IMF chief as nominations close later today.
As well as Lagarde, two others are expected to put their hat in the ring for the vacancy, which arose after Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned last month to face sexual assault charges in New York.
The other two candidates are Mexico's central bank governor Agustin Carstens and the head of Kazakhstan's central bank Grigory Marchenko.
The IMF's huge commitment to the rescue of Ireland, Portugal and Greece is likely to be a key factor when the board begins reviewing the candidates next week.
A decision is due to be announced at the end of June.
