Traffic cameras go down in the capital
Websites offering commuters footage of Dublin rush-hour traffic went down today as Operation Freeflow got under way in the capital.
The Dublin Transportation Office (DTO) confirmed the plan for tackling the heavy morning traffic was unaffected but the links from the cameras to the website www.freeflow.ie suffered minor problems during the day.
A spokeswoman for the DTO said the links from the cameras to the traffic control room operated as normal with only the external websites affected.
The spokeswoman said some commuters use the websites to plan their routes home. “We are fixing it for tomorrow,” she said.
The DTO said Bus Eireann had reported its vehicles were on schedule during the morning traffic, while Dublin Bus reported better times than normal on the N4 and N7. The Luas was also running clearly with garda presence along junctions north of the Liffey helping to keep the streets free.
Dozens of traffic gardai will be backed by 163 student officers for the six-week anti-gridlock initiative for Christmas and the New Year.
Congestion points such as Quality Bus Corridors, major traffic junctions and Luas interchanges will be targeted for special attention during Operation Freeflow.
Deputy Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy promised rigorous enforcement of the Road Traffic Act by his officers.
“Traffic disruption will be kept to a minimum for users of both public and private transport,” he said.
Specialist Garda services also being deployed between today and Friday, January 5 include the Air Support Unit, the Garda Mountain Bike Unit, the Garda Regional Traffic Division, the Garda Mounted Unit and Garda Communications.
“Gardaí on motorcycle, car and on foot patrol will also have specific duties to target and tackle any problems that may arise,” Deputy Commissioner Murphy said.
