Alonso cruising in the slow lane

Fernando Alonso will take his time before choosing which Formula One team he will be driving for next year.

Fernando Alonso will take his time before choosing which Formula One team he will be driving for next year.

The double world champion’s manager Luis Garcia Abad was careful to add no fresh urgency to the situation, following Renault team boss Flavio Briatore’s suggestion yesterday that the Spaniard would decide within two days whether to rejoin the French constructors.

Abad told BBC Sport: “He will decide when he knows the best option for his future.”

It is thought that Nelson Piquet Jr, Renault’s test driver last season, will step up into one of the team’s race seats – and the remaining one will be filled by Heikki Kovalainen unless Alonso goes back to the team with whom he won the world title in 2005 and 2006.

Italian veteran Giancarlo Fisichella is not expected to be offered another season with Renault.

Alonso has also been linked with Red Bull, Toyota and BMW Sauber.

He joined McLaren last summer and finished the season equal on points with team-mate Lewis Hamilton, one behind Ferrari’s world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
