'Only Fools and Horses' star was planning show's return before writer's death

An 'Only Fools and Horses' comeback was being planned before the show creator's death.

Sir David Jason - who played cocky con-man Derek 'Del Boy' Trotter in the BBC One sitcom from 1981 until 2003 - has revealed he was orchestrating the popular character's grand return before writer John Sullivan passed away in 2011.

He said: "The ironic story is that John and I had a meeting about three months before he died about a special 'Fools and Horses'

"It was going to be Del's 65th birthday. We talked about it. But John's the magic man. He made the ammunition and we fired the bullets."

Despite the success of the comedy classic, which ran for over 70 episodes, David has vowed never to reprise the role again because he doesn't want to tarnish the memory of John's brilliant scripts.

He said: "It won't come back. There's no writer who is capable of taking the challenge."

The esteemed 73-year-old British actor insisted he wasn't going to retire any time soon, however.

He told the Daily Star newspaper: "Old actors never die, they just look for a better script. I've got no intention of giving anything up."
