Court to sentence Cork woman accused of young son's manslaughter

A 45-year-old Cork woman is due to be sentenced today for killing her eight-year-old son.

Diane Ward pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her son Anthony at their home at Harrison's Place in Charleville on September 3, 2012.

A post mortem concluded that Anthony Ward died from asphyxia on the first day of a new school term.

His mother Diane Ward was charged with the murder of her only son.

However, the Director of Public Prosecutions accepted her plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility.

Psychiatric evidence will be put before the court at her sentencing hearing later today.
