Security has been stepped up at Shannon and Dublin airports, and the Army and Gardaí have been put on heightened alert in the wake of last week's London bomb attacks.
However, following this afternoon’s meeting of the task force on emergency planning, the Government said the threat of a terrorist attack here was still low.
Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea said the Islamic community represented a much smaller percentage of the population here, and that only a tiny number were considered radicals.
He said he didn't believe that those under surveillance by Gardaí were trying to recruit here.
Mr O'Dea said: “The information available to us suggests that they are not.
“Of course, when we say that the risk is low, that's based on the assessment by the security services. That's their honest opinion given to me based on the intelligence they have. That doesn’t mean there's no risk at all or that we can afford to be complacent. I can assure you we're not complacent.”
