Monday D-Day for Henson

Gavin Henson looks set to discover on Monday whether or not he has a future with wealthy French Top 14 club Toulon.

A fortnight has elapsed since Wales international Henson was handed a week-long suspension by Toulon following an alleged fracas with team-mates after helping his new club beat Toulouse in Marseille.

It had been thought a decision on Henson’s future in the Cote d’Azur would be made earlier this week. His existing Toulon contract expires at the end of this season.

“One of the reasons the decision has been delayed until Monday is that we still do not have a full version of events,” Toulon team manager Tom Whitford told The Guardian website.

“In a matter like this, one person can say one thing and someone else says another. We are determined to find out exactly what happened.

“It is not like England or Wales where someone can be sacked on the spot.

“That is not to prejudge what will happen on Monday when Gavin will meet with Mourad Boudjellal (the Toulon owner) and (head coach) Philippe Saint-Andre.

“He may be released from his contract, or he may remain with the club. Nothing has been decided yet, and it would not be fair to say this amounted to a stay of execution.

“Gavin will not be training with the squad until the outcome of Monday’s meeting is known,” Whitford said.

Wales coach Warren Gatland will be among those monitoring events.

Gatland is due to meet with Henson and number eight Andy Powell, who is currently suspended by his club Wasps after he was involved in a bar-room brawl in London earlier this month.
