A roadside bomb exploded today in a tunnel in the heart of the Iraqi capital as a US military convoy passed by, residents said. Two soldiers were said to be slightly injured.

The blast, which could be heard in a wide area in the centre of Baghdad, occurred about 6.45am local time after three US Army Humvees entered the tunnel at Tehran Square, witnesses said.

Laith Abed Ali, 35, and Walid Jabbar, 27, said they saw lightly wounded Americans walk out of the tunnel shortly after the blast.

US troops rushed to the area.

Capt Tommy Leslie of the 1st Armoured Division confirmed two soldiers suffered minor injuries but would be returned to duty later in the day. One Humvee was damaged.
