Varadkar: Irish worse off this Christmas compared to last year

A Government Minister has admitted people in Ireland are worse off this Christmas than last, but has said the country is making progress.

Tourism and Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has admitted people in Ireland are worse off this Christmas than last, but has said the country is making progress.

In his 'end of year' report for his Department, he has said projects that have not been cut, like the linking up of the two LUAS lines in Dublin, will be achieved.

But, it comes as public transport users prepare for price hikes in the New Year, and the AA warns that the country's road network could deteriorate to 1980s standards.

Minister Varadkar has been speaking about the Government's performance too, claiming there will be extra costs for everyone in 2012.

However, he said nobody's pay packet will be less in January as a result of coalition moves.
