Head-on Colombian bus collision leaves 22 dead
Two buses packed with passengers crashed head-on on a highway in northern Colombia, killing at least 22 people and injuring 38 others, police said today.
The accident occurred last night near the city of Maicao, 440 miles north of Bogota in La Guajira state, a desert region. Both vehicles were destroyed.
Guajira police chief Alejandro Callejas told reporters that it appeared the driver of one of the buses “didn’t respect the road signs and tried to overtake on a curve and then collided with another bus.”
The injured were rushed to a hospital in Maicao. An investigation was underway.
