Kenny: Blame for economic 'mess' lies with Fianna Fáil

The Taoiseach has said the Central Bank will have independent oversight of arrangements between banks and those unable to pay their mortgages.

The measures to be announced this afternoon will see split mortgages, extended interest-only periods, limited write-downs, and some repossessions.

In the Dáil, Enda Kenny came under fire for presiding over just 50 split mortgages, while more than 180,000 mortgages are in distress.

The Taoiseach blamed Fianna Fáil for delays in sorting out this issue.

"The scale of the mess that you left behind you was absolutely unprecedented in the history of this country," he said this morning, addressing Fianna Fáil deputies in the Dáil.

"The reason that all of this was inflicted on our country was incompetence by your Government."
