Home players Boo Weekley, Brandt Snedeker and Brandt Jobe were the only early starters under par during the third round of the US Open at Torrey Pines today.

The course has been described as tough but fair and it lived up to its reputation during today's early rounds.

The remainder of the early starters found the going difficult with San Diego's "June Gloom" rolling in off the Pacific.

Weekley and Snedeker were two under through 13 and 10 holes respectively, while Jobe was one under through four.

A handful of players were at even par with most of the field struggling to find birdies on Torrey Pines' South Course.

Weekley, Snedeker and Jobe were all at five over and eight shots behind leader Stuart Appleby of Australia, who was set to tee off with American Rocco Mediate in the final group.

Tiger Woods and Sweden's Robert Karlsson were due out in the next to last group with Woods looking to pick up right where he left off when he begins the third round.

Looking for his third US Open title, Woods scorched the front nine - his final nine - on Friday with a five-under 30.

He carded a three on the first five holes coming in, including four birdies and a birdie at the ninth got him to two under for a 140 total, just a stroke off the lead.

Mediate and Karlsson were also at two under following their second rounds, with Lee Westwood and Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez at one under.
