The battle for golf’s biggest cheque – the €1.5m on offer in the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth on September 15-18 – will be contested without Tiger Woods as well as defending champion Ernie Els.
Masters and Open champion Woods, runner-up to Mark O’Meara in his only appearance in 1998, has confirmed that once again he will not be taking part.
The championship comes the week before the President’s Cup match, America versus the rest of the world minus Europe, in Virginia.
Els is out of both events and, it is expected, the rest of the season after surgery on the left knee he injured on a sailing holiday following the Open.
The 16-man Wentworth field can still boast Vijay Singh, Michael Campbell, Retief Goosen, Colin Montgomerie, Angel Cabrera and Kenneth Ferrie, with other places to be determined after this week’s US PGA championship.
