Danny Higginbotham’s late own goal gave Boro hope with a minute of normal time remaining, and exciting young winger Stewart Downing left Redknapp flabbergasted with a dramatic equaliser scored from long range.

Everton overtook Arsenal to claim second place in the Premiership with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Merseyside rivals Liverpool in the early kick-off of the day.

Lee Carsley was the hero as his second-half strike capped off a spirited performance for the home side. Liverpool were unable to clear their lines and when Leon Osman picked up the ball inside the penalty area and poked it towards Carsley, the former Derby player drove the ball beyond unsighted Reds goalkeeper Chris Kirkland to send Goodison Park into raptures.

Rafael Benitez’s side were unable to reply and high-flying Everton held on for the win, their first in seven years against the Reds at Goodison Park.

Norwich recorded only their second win of the season with a thrilling 3-2 victory at home to Bolton, inspired by on-loan winger David Bentley.

It had looked grim for the Canaries when Bolton took a 19th-minute lead through Jay-Jay Okocha’s penalty after Gary Doherty was penalised for handball in the area.

But the home side hit back immediately, with Bentley the orchestrator. The man on loan from Arsenal finding Mathias Svensson who coolly finished to equalise.

The game took another twist soon after when the visitors regained their lead, Spanish veteran Fernando Hierro rising to power home Stelios Giannakopoulos’ corner. Norwich levelled again when Bentley was brought down in the box by Gary Speed and Darren Huckerby finished coolly from the spot with 21 minutes to play.

And an exciting afternoon was completed at Carrow Road when Bentley again picked out Svensson, who scored his second of the day to hand Nigel Worthington’s men a much-needed win.

Tottenham earned a welcome three points with a narrow 1-0 win over Manchester City. Frederic Kanoute unleashed a sublime effort which David James had little chance of stopping and the home side were unable to muster a reply.

Newcastle and Portsmouth shared the points in a 1-1 draw after the home side dominated the first half.

Newcastle took an early lead with less than four minutes gone at St James’ Park, Lee Bowyer latching on to Steven Taylor’s pass and taking his chance well.

But Pompey equalised against the run of play. Dejan Stefanovic managed to head the ball goalwards from Patrik Berger’s corner and when Bowyer’s clearance fell to veteran Steve Stone, the former England midfielder pounced to equalise with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

West Brom are rooted to the bottom of the table following a 1-0 defeat by Charlton as Matt Holland swept home the only goal from the edge of the area.

Crystal Palace and Blackburn played out a 0-0 stalemate at Selhurst Park, as Rovers had injury-plagued David Thompson sent off for two yellow cards.
