Philip Hobbs will keep an eye on how the Paddy Power Gold Cup field shapes up before deciding whether to commit Wishfull Thinking to the Cheltenham feature.
The Minehead trainer wants to avoid last season’s smart novice chaser carrying top weight in the handicap chase on November 12.
Should it look like turning out that way then he would reroute the eight-year-old to the Amlin Chase at Ascot a week later.
“We have the option of the Paddy Power which on the entries he won’t be top weight, but he might end up carrying top weight, so we will have to have a look at the race nearer the time,” Hobbs told At The Races.
“If we decide to dodge it then he’ll probably run in the Amlin Chase at Ascot the following week.
“It would be great to have a runner in that race because Amlin are our yard sponsors.”
