Davies the hero as Everton climb off bottom

Maik Taylor’s howler enabled Simon Davies to secure victory for Everton in the Premiership basement clash and send plunge Steve Bruce’s side into deeper trouble.

FT: Birmingham 0 Everton 1

A Maik Taylor howler enabled Simon Davies to secure victory for Everton in the Premiership basement clash and send plunge Steve Bruce’s side into deeper trouble.

The Northern Ireland number one allowed a straightforward drive from Davies to slip from his grasp and settle the issue shortly before half-time.

There was unbridled joy among the Everton supporters at the final whistle at achieving only their second league win of the campaign as they leapfrogged above their opponents.

Everton boss David Moyes brought on Kevin Kilbane for Van der Meyde as the game entered the final 20 minutes.

Steve Bruce had to gamble and he took off skipper Cunningham and replaced him with striker Walter Pandiani in a last throw of the dice.

The Uruguayan was quickly involved and it needed a good tackle by David Weir to halt him after he had cut into the area.

Beattie went for glory with an overhead kick but his effort flew straight at Maik Taylor. Heskey had a header deflected over the bar by Yobo from Pennant’s deep cross and Pandiani fired over from eight yards out.
