A cache of detonators exploded at a chemical factory in China’s south-west, killing at least seven people and razing several buildings.

The explosion yesterday in Meishan, a city in Sichuan province, also left two people missing and eight injured, the Xinhua News Agency said.

Investigators believe the blast occurred as factory employees were handling detonators, Xinhua said. It said the factory had about 13,000 detonators at the time, but didn’t say how many exploded or give other details.

The factory, run by the Hongya Qingyijiang Chemical Company, produced mirabilite, a chemical salt used in traditional Chinese medicine.
