Injury forces Murray out of Davis Cup tie

Andy Murray has withdrawn from Great Britain’s Davis Cup tie against Ukraine after failing to shake off a virus that ended his run at last week’s Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships.

Andy Murray has withdrawn from Great Britain’s Davis Cup tie against Ukraine after failing to shake off a virus that ended his run at last week’s Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships.

The British number one and world number four was due to meet France’s Richard Gasquet in the quarter-finals of the Dubai tournament but pulled out shortly before taking the court.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) today confirmed Murray would not recover in time to face the Ukrainians in the Europe/Africa Zone second-round clash at the Braehead Arena in Renfrewshire starting on Friday.

A spokesman for Murray confirmed the Scot’s withdrawal in a statement on the LTA website, www.lta.org.uk: “Following his withdrawal from the Dubai Open, Andy’s condition hasn’t improved.

“After daily visits from the LTA doctor and a number of medical tests, Andy has been told to rest for at least seven days to overcome his virus.

“Andy is greatly disappointed that he has to pull out of the upcoming Davis Cup tie as he was looking forward to playing for Great Britain in front of his home crowd.

“Andy will be right behind John Lloyd and the team when they compete against Ukraine this Friday.”

Murray revealed in a statement on his personal website the virus had hit him very hard but backed his Great Britain team-mates to take the tie to Ukraine in his absence.

“Obviously, I’m very disappointed that I won’t be playing in Glasgow this week, but the doctor has told me that I need complete rest for at least seven days, and I have to respect that,” said Murray, who has won ATP titles in Doha and Rotterdam this season.

“I hoped that pulling out of Dubai when I did would give me enough time to recover, but this virus has hit me harder than any illness I’ve had before and I still feel terrible.

“Missing out on a home tie is tough for me, but more than anything I’m sorry for all the people making the journey who had hoped to see me play in the team.

“The support we get is always amazing, and I know people have to make sacrifices to give us that. But Davis Cup is a team game, and the fans still have a massive role to play.”

Great Britain’s Davis Cup captain John Lloyd was disappointed by the news but admitted there was no alternative but for Murray to pull out.

“It’s obviously disappointing that Andy is unable to play in this Davis Cup tie but our medical team has been monitoring Andy closely and don’t feel that he is in a position to compete,” he said.

“We all hope he makes a swift recovery and is back playing again soon.

“I now need to focus on preparing the team for the tie against Ukraine – we have five players up here who are desperate to play and they have all impressed me in the last week.

“[LTA head coach] Paul Annacone and I will discuss who will replace Andy in the team and make a decision in the next couple of days.”
