Two Japanese military helicopters have crashed into a mountain during a night flight exercise, killing at least three crew members.

Military officials and police say they suspect the helicopters, each carrying two crew members, collided before hitting the ground.

Authorities continued their search for the fourth crew member, who remained missing hours after the crash.

Officials did not immediately have information about the cause of the accident in Oita state on Japan's southernmost island of Kyushu.
