A protest march to demand a radiotherapy centre in the Southeast is due to take place this afternoon in Waterford City.

Patients from the area have to travel to Dublin for treatment. Cancer Care Alliance is calling for the same treatment to be made available to patients in the Southeast as that in place for people suffering from cancer in Cork, Galway and Limerick.

Dr Jerry Cowley of the Cancer Care Alliance said yesterday that patients who have to travel for care have a reduced chance of survival.

"These people are ill people. These are people who have to face journeys every day, which is totally and utterly unacceptable."
