The 23-year-old man being questioned about the murder of a young woman in Clare was in a relationship with her, it emerged today.

The body of Ann Walsh, 23, from Pella Road in Kilrush was found at the rear of St Senan’s Church in the town.

According to a local source, she had been seen drinking and arguing in Kilrush earlier that night with her 23-year-old boyfriend, who is also from the area.

It is believed the couple then went into the grounds of St Senan’s Church, which is on Toler Street.

Gardaí arrived at the scene after 11pm last night and found Ms Walsh’s partially clothed body. She had neck injuries and it is believed she had been strangled.

Gardaí had been contacted by the 23-year-old man’s brother, who had received a phone call from his sibling.

Gardaí arrested the man close to the scene at St Senan’s Church and detained him under Section Four of the Non Fatal Offences Against The Person Act.

Superintendent Joe McKeown, who is leading the murder investigation, has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

“If they heard anything last night between 10pm and 11pm, contact Kilrush Garda Station,” he said.

The scene at the rear of the church has been preserved by forensic officers and a post mortem on Ms Walsh’s body will be carried out later today at Ennis General Hospital.

Kilrush is the largest town in west Clare and is located on the Shannon Estuary.
