The counting of votes for the Seanad is continuing in Leinster House.
All 60 seats are up for grabs and amongst the ex-TDs battling it out are Fine Gael’s Brian Hayes, Marian McGuinness of Fianna Fail and former Fine Gael TD Jim Higgins from Mayo.
A total of 112 candidates are standing for election.
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, nominates 11 senators, the National University of Ireland and Trinity College nominate six and the remaining 43 are drawn from the ranks of county councils and well-known national institutions.
The elected senators will sit on five panels, including agriculture, labour, culture and education, industry and commerce and administration.
The result of the election is expected in the coming days.
