Anscombe ready for Montpellier challenge

Ulster coach Mark Anscombe says his side can have no regrets as they get set for Round Two Heineken Cup action this weekend.

They make the trip to Montpellier on the back of their first home win in the competition over Leicester Tigers, but the manner in which they sealed victory seemed to be disappointing after squandering some big try scoring chances in both halves, just holding on for victory thanks to the boot of Paddy Jackson.

“When you analyse a game you look back sometimes with a bit of despair that you don’t take your chances," Anscombe said.

"But there can't be regrets.

"When you look at the objectives… we set out to beat the English champions and get a home win and we did that."

However the Ulster coach admitted there was still plenty of room for improvement.

"Most definitely," he said. "That’s what this week has been about - preparing for another game and

trying to right the wrongs, and that’s what you do all year."

Considering they had a bumpy start to the season, Anscombe has been impressed at the way his squad have turned things around, with three consecutive Pro 12 wins - against Connacht, Treviso and Ospreys - under their belts before claiming the Tigers' skin last weekend.

“We’re progressing, we’re going the right way and we have a healthy squad," Anscome said.

"We know we have a hell of a job this weekend in France.”

Despite the challenge ahead, Ulster need not look to far back for inspiration, having beaten Castres at home in Round Six of last year's European Cup - albeit by a single point.

“It doesn’t happen a lot does it?" Anscombe said.

"Their (French sides') track records at home in the top 14 and the Heineken Cup is impressive.

“You never go over there and have an easy game and Montpellier are at the top of the Top 14. They have a massive team, a big pack and sharp backs so their confident, positive and there is a

lot of self-belief there and it’s going to be one hell of a battle.”
