US TV news anchor Dan Rather is quitting on the 24th anniversary of his appointment by CBS.

Embattled US TV news anchor Dan Rather is quitting on the 24th anniversary of his appointment by CBS.

The 73-year-old has decided he wants to go back to being a hard news reporter.

The veteran was under fire in recent months for his role in a story that questioned President Bush’s service in the National Guard, which turned out to based on allegedly forged documents.

Rather made no mention of that story in announcing his move.
