Gillespie's Kylie screams shocks Glastonbury

Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie had to be wrestled off stage by security guards as the Glastonbury Festival reached a rousing and raucous climax last night.

The Scot baited both the crowd and headline act Basement Jaxx before his band’s plugs were pulled and he was led off the Pyramid Stage.

Gillespie taunted festival-goers, shouting: “Did anyone come to see Kylie? F*** you,“ in reference to original headline act Kylie Minogue, who was forced to pull out of the event as she recovers from treatment for breast cancer.

The Australian pop princess – who has undergone surgery in her home city of Melbourne – received a more fitting mention from her replacements on the bill, dance act Basement Jaxx.

They performed a soul-tinged version of the singer’s hit Can’t Get You Out Of My Head and dedicated it to “every woman who has suffered from breast cancer“.

Saturday’s headline act Coldplay had covered the same song as a tribute to Kylie – who is expected to perform at the festival in 2007, when it returns following a year’s break.

On the Other Stage, headline act Ian Brown fuelled speculation about a future reunion of Mancunian band The Stone Roses, asking the crowd if they wanted to see the cult group back together.

He was joined onstage by former bandmate Gary “Mani” Mounfield and the pair performed a string of their former group’s hits, including Waterfall and Made of Stone.

The festival had earlier seen stand-out sets from veteran performers Brian Wilson and Van Morrison.

Former Beach Boy Wilson left the crowd ecstatic with renditions of Wouldn’t It Be Nice and Good Vibrations.

Crowds were continuing to stream away from the festival site this morning, with heavy congestion expected on surrounding roads.

Organisers warned that drivers could face queues of over five hours just to leave the fields – with some areas still likely to be affected by mud caused by pounding rain on Friday.
