Robben eyes injury-free run

Arjen Robben is hoping to put the injury problems that blighted his last days at Chelsea behind him as he embarks on a new life with Real Madrid.

The Holland winger enjoyed a memorable first season in London after moving to Stamford Bridge from PSV Eindhoven in 2004, but fitness problems curtailed his progress after that.

By his own admission, Robben’s stay at Chelsea did not pan out as successfully as he would have wanted, but the 23-year-old is keeping his fingers crossed for better times ahead in Spain.

“For a player, the most frustrating thing is to be injured, and many times there is nothing you can do about it, the only thing is to work hard to come back,” Robben said after signing a five-year contract with Real on Thursday.

“That is why I want to make a new start here. I know I am strong, I know I can do it.

“I had three very nice years at Chelsea, it was a great experience for me personally.

“I won every prize I could have have won in England, so I’m very satisfied with that. Unfortunately I had too many injuries there so I could not give the impact that I wanted to.

“In my first year, I think I had a very good year, but then I had some bad luck and for me I see this as a new start, a new challenge, without any injuries and I hope I can stay out of that terrible (treatment) room for a very long time.”

Robben, who underwent knee surgery in March, has been short of match practice recently but he is confident he will be good to go if selected by Real coach Bernd Schuster for Saturday’s Primera Liga opener against Atletico Madrid.

“I am ready to play, I had a little problem with my knee because I had surgery. But I have been training this week, I played a little friendly match yesterday (Wednesday) with Chelsea, where I played one hour.

“I will train tonight (Thursday) with the (Real) squad and hopefully I am ready for Saturday.”

Regarding his decision to quit Chelsea for Primera Liga champions Real, Robben said: “After a while, I didn’t get the confidence I needed, and then I started changing my mind. And when a massive club like Real Madrid comes for you then I think decision is easy to make.”

Robben was not the only new face to be presented by Real on Thursday, with Argentina defender Gabriel Heinze penning a four-year contract following his move from Manchester United.

The 29-year-old, who becomes the third player to move from United to Real in the last few years after David Beckham and Ruud van Nistelrooy, had been looking to secure a switch to Liverpool.

However, that move was blocked by the Premier League and Heinze was still considering whether to launch an appeal against that decision when Real swooped on Wednesday night.

Heinze admits he never expected to end up at the Bernabeu, saying: “Not at all. I’m very happy because I’m at one of the most important clubs in history. That’s a great honour.”

Heinze, who became unsettled at United after losing his first-team place to Patrice Evra, believes the Red Devils supporters will understand his reasons for leaving Old Trafford.

“The Manchester United fans know how I think and how I am. I never said anything about this issue, I simply did what I felt I had to do,” said Heinze, who won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year during his first season at United.

“The fans are not stupid, they won’t forget what I did for the club. I have left as a champion and gave everything for Manchester United.

“I don’t know if (Sir Alex) Ferguson is disappointed in me. You should ask him if you get the chance.”
