An FA statement said: “Newcastle United FC midfielder Joey Barton has today been charged with violent conduct by the FA following an incident in his side’s fixture with Blackburn Rovers FC on Wednesday, November 10.

“Barton has until 6pm on Friday, November 12 to reply to the charge and under the FA’s fast-track regulations, may admit the charge and accept a standard three-match suspension.”

Barton's fist appeared to make contact with Pedersen's ribs in the aftermath of an incident inside the Newcastle penalty area as Rovers midfielder Junior Hoilett was being booked for diving.

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce was happy to let the authorities deal with the matter immediately after the game, although opposite number Chris Hughton, like the officials, did not see it at the time.

Having also viewed video footage of it, Hughton today did not condone Barton’s actions, but insisted the reaction has been intensified because of his track record.

He said: “I have seen it again and I am aware that he has raised his hands, but I am also very conscious that because it’s Joey Barton, there will be far more made of it than any other individual.

“This is an individual who not so long ago the television was showing him being kicked from pillar to post around a football ground.”

If Barton admits his guilt or is alternatively convicted of the offence, he will miss Saturday’s home clash with Fulham, next weekend’s trip to Bolton and the visit of champions Chelsea to St James’ on November 28.

The former Manchester City player’s latest brush with the authorities comes after he has made an excellent start to the season during which he looked to have put his well-documented problems firmly behind him.
