Stuart Appleby regained a two-stroke lead over Vijay Singh after the third round at the Mercedes Championship.
Appleby, who led after the first round before surrendering the halfway advantage to Singh, popped his nose back in front with a seven-under-par 66 on Maui’s Kapalua Plantation course.
The Australian posted an impressive 54-hole total of 20-under 199. Singh struggled a little with his putter en route to a 69 that left him at 18-under 201.
“Today was not too dissimilar to the other days,” Appleby said. “I have played solid golf for three days.”
“I didn’t play badly at all,” Singh said. “I just need to get that putter hot, like yesterday.”
It was not quite safe to declare it a two-horse race, but it was close, with Retief Goosen five shots back in third place. Darren Clarke trailed by six.
Tiger Woods carded a superb 65 but still left himself with a big mountain to climb, seven shots behind.
