At least one person has died and 90 people have been injured in an Amtrak train derailment in Iowa.
Several other passengers are also believed to have died in the accident which happened when the California Zepher's two locomotives and 15 carriages came off the tracks 70 miles southwest of Des Moines.
A lack of road access hampered rescuers' attempts to get to the train, which was carrying 195 passengers and 13 crew members.
The victims have been transported to six area hospitals, some by helicopter. Two of the passengers are said to be in a serious condition.
The train was going from Chicago to Emeryville, California, when the derailment occurred at about 1am in Adams County.
State troopers are at the scene, as well as sheriff's personnel from four counties and police and firefighters from a number of surrounding communities.
Amtrak's customer response team and National Transportation and Safety Board investigators are en route to the crash site.
Uninjured passengers are being taken to a community centre in Nodaway where Amtrak was arranging for shelter and alternate transportation.
