Bewley's is to close its Northern Cross bakery in Dublin.
It also stated that two of its cafes in Dublin's city centre - Grafton Street and Westmoreland Street - are under threat of closure unless it can effect what it termed radical changes.
44 staff at the Northern Cross bakery are to be redeployed to other operations, the company said in a statement issued today.
Bewley's blamed the fall-off in trade in the city centre on traffic congestion, LUAS works and increases in rates, rent, insurance and the price of flour, which had risen over 20% in the past two years.
Managing director Jim Corbett said that Bewley's had been looking for a buyer for the Northern Cross operation but that efforts had proved unsuccessful.
