Long-serving defender Alan Wright has vowed to win back his first-team spot at Aston Villa despite being frozen out since the return of Graham Taylor as manager.
Wright joined Villa seven years ago from Blackburn and has clocked up more than 300 appearances for the midlands club and been the regular right-back under Brian Little and John Gregory.
But he has not even been on the substitute’s bench since Taylor’s arrival four games ago with youngster Jloyd Samuel now preferred in his position.
Wright, whose last appearance was in the FA Cup clash with Manchester United, admitted: ‘‘It’s not been ideal and it’s been strange to find myself out of the team.
‘‘It’s not so long ago that things were looking good for both me and the team but I’m experienced enough to know that things can turn around very quickly.
‘‘Jlloyd has taken his chance really well, is right in form and looking a good prospect.
‘‘But I’ve just got to get my head down and get on with it and what I intend to do is wait for my chance and be ready when the manager calls.’’
Villa midfielder George Boateng said: ‘‘I’m sure Alan will be using his current situation as a motivation.
‘‘He’ll see it as part and parcel of a footballer’s life. He won’t be looking for a move or anything like that. He’s above all that.
‘‘But you know you can rely on him when you need him and he never throws the towel in.’’
