A major contract to manage power transmission systems in the US has been awarded to a consortium involving two ESB companies.

A major contract to manage power transmission systems in the US has been awarded to a consortium involving two ESB companies.

ESB International and ESB National Grid were two members of the three member consortium that beat off competition from 10 others to win the contract in south-eastern America.

ESB chief executive Padraig McManus has said the amount of work involved is quite substantial.

"What we are looking at managing represents 10% of the sales of electricity in the US, about 73,000 megawatts of power capacity.

"By comparative terms it equates to the power system in France. So its a substantial job in a developed economy and it's also a very high-tech job which we're very pleased about."
