Oil refineries in Texas were on alert today after a warning from the FBI that they may be targeted by terrorists.
Agents told oil bosses that there had been non-specific threats, based on intelligence gathered from overseas.
Security was tightened at plants along the Gulf of Mexico following the alert.
An FBI spokesman said the agency had alerted the Texas Coastal Regional Advisory System (TCRAS), a shared information and communication system that is part of the Houston Joint Terrorism Task Force.
“It’s really uncorroborated, but there was enough there we thought it was best to send something out across TCRAS,” the Houston-area FBI spokesman said.
