Motorsport: Gilmore takes top spot again

For the second time today, Matthew Gilmore has taken top spot in the British Formula 3 Scholarship Class qualifying session at Brands Hatch.

The Northern Ireland driver took pole with some 13 minutes remaining.

Joining him on the front row for tomorrow’s second race will be Justin Sherwood (GB) while Brazilian, Ernani Judice and Clonakilty’s, Michael Keohane

complete the second row.

Championship leader, Robbie Kerr finally managed to get out on the Kent circuit

with some 11 minutes of the session remaining and the best he could achieve was a place on the fourth row.

Kerr damaged his car on the first qualifier this morning. Kerr, Gilmore and Keohane are the championship top trio entering tomorrow’s double header.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland’s, Derek Hayes will start both of tomorrow’s Championship Class races on the second row.

Australian, James Courtney is on pole for the second race.

In the Ford Credit Fiesta qualifier, Portadown’s, Colin Turkington topped the list but fellow Irish driver, Eoin Murray will start down on the fifth row.

In the Scottish Rally, Mark Higgins, in a Subaru, continues to lead.

After four stages, he is some 38 seconds ahead of the Subaru WRC of Alistair Ginley, who is being co-driven by Donegal’s, Rory Kennedy.

In the Formula Rally series, Justin Dale (Peugeot 106) continues to hold the advantage.

Wexford’s, Eamonn Boland and co-driver, Anthony Nestor, in a Subaru WRC are eighth overall, three minutes and 44.4 seconds off the lead.

Rory Galligan (Peugeot) is tenth.

Overall positions for the other Irish drivers are Gary Jennings 21st; Shaun Gallagher 32nd; and Kris Meeke 46th.

In Mondello Park, Jonathan Fildes won the RT2000 race despite a poor start. Brendan Donegan was second.

Qualifying for tomorrow’s final round of the Ford of Ireland Ford Zetec Championship has concluded.

The grid is: 1. Philip Kershaw; 2. George McAlpin; 3. Michael Devaney; 4. Charlie Donnelly; 5. Alan Ring and 6. Alan Dwyer.
