The United States and Russia have reached agreement on a new nuclear arms treaty, according to US President George W Bush.

The new treaty will require each country to reduce their nuclear arsenal to 1,700 - 2,200 warheads from the 6,000 currently allowed by the Start I treaty.

Mr Bush said today that he will sign the new agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin when he travels to Russia for talks on May 24.

"The treaty will liquidate the legacy of the Cold War and begin a new era of US-Russian relations," Mr Bush said.
