UniPhar Group today announced the forthcoming merger of its two successful surgical business units, Whelehan Surgical and Surgicare.

Whelehan Surgical is part of the Whelehan Group, acquired by UniPhar in mid-2004. Surgicare has been a division of the UniPhar Group since 2001.

The new business unit is be known as Whelehan Surgicare and will operate from the Whelehan Group premises at the Northern Cross Business Park, Finglas, Dublin 11. Whelehan Surgicare will employ the 21 staff from the two businesses with the merger expected to be completed by early September 2007.

According to UniPhar Group's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Jim Canavan, the significant synergies realised by the merger will provide the impetus for sustained growth and expansion within the surgical market into the future.

He said: "We believe the best way to serve our customers' needs in an ever increasingly complex healthcare environment is to merge our two surgical divisions to enable us to provide more specialised support and a broader service offering."
