A 21-year-old Dublin man has been sentenced to six and a half years in jail for stabbing an English national seven times.

David Colclough of Pearse St in Dublin, pleaded guilty to his part in an attack on a mixed race family in the capital 16 months ago.

David Richardson and his black wife, Laverne, came to Dublin in June 2000 to visit their son Christian, who was working here.

After a night out, they were walking home along Pearse St, when a group of youths shouted a stream of racial taunts.

A fracas ensued and David Richardson was knocked to the ground, and stabbed seven times in the back, chest and hands.

He sustained serious injuries and the court was told it was a miracle he survived.

David Colclough admitted the assault, but denied it was racially motivated.

He further admitted to causing affray in a separate incident three months later while out on bail and he was sentenced to 12 months to run consecutively.
