Traffic chaos is forecast in the Co Kildare region today as 70,000 people descend for the two-day Oxegen music festival.

All roads leading to Punchestown racecourse in Co Kildare are expected to be jammed as music fans flock to see over 80 acts perform.

Organisers, the Gardaí and AA roadwatch have appealed to people to use public transport rather than venture onto the main N7, M7 and N81 routes leading to the site.

More than 5,000 music fans are also expected to camp out at the Co Kildare racecourse for the weekend.

Some of the top acts spread across the five stages on Saturday include Green Day, Queens of the Stone Age, Kaiser Chiefs, Ian Brown and Interpol.

Those braving it out for the Sunday gigs will be able to scramble between stages to snatch a glimpse of dozens of bands including the Foo Fighters, Keane, The Killers, Feeder, Doves, Jimmy Eat World, Bloc Party, Kasabian, James Brown or Death in Vegas.

The Order of Malta has 70 personnel and ambulance crews on site to deal with any problems over the weekend.

Dozens of gardaí, drug enforcement officers, sniffer dogs and security officers will also be policing the grounds.

Dublin Bus is operating a shuttle service to Punchestown from Parnell Square West. Buses will depart every 20 minutes

Organisers said there were no fears of a wash-out with the weather forecast signalling sunshine for the weekend.
