Ireland’s most ambitious engineering scheme reaches a milestone today as the Dublin Port Tunnel breaks through in the north of the city.

After two years of non-stop work on the flagship €715m project, the tunnel-boring machine is to complete the route to Collins Avenue, Whitehall.

“This marks the end of the second 2.2km tunnel drive, which started last year at Fairview Park,” said Tim Brick, Dublin City Deputy Engineer.

“The completion of the second tube marks a significant engineering achievement in this nationally important project.”

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan is to mark the breakthrough after two years of work on the twin 11.8m wide tunnels which run for 4.5km from the northern edge of the city to the port.

When finished, it is hoped, the tunnel will take around 10,000 lorries and heavy goods vehicles off the capital’s streets each day.
