There, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 1.7% lower while the tech-dominated Nasdaq Composite lost 3.6%.
Telecoms and technology stocks are bearing the brunt of the drop in confidents, with Spirent down 10p at 203p, while Dimension Data is off 7p at 293p and Logica is down 12p at 845p.
With investors taking refuge in defensive stocks such as financial services, CGNU is ahead 4p at 923p, Prudential has gained 12p at 835p and Barclays has picked up 8p at £22.55
British Airways, which announced the sale of low-cost airline Go late yesterday afternoon, has gained 3p at 335p today.
Go's new owner, venture capital group 3i, has lost 17p at £11.74.
