Celtic are still looking for their first away win in the group stages of the tournament after 13 attempts and look forward to AC Milan visiting Parkhead in their next Group D match.

Last season Celtic lost their opening game against Manchester United but qualified through to the knockout stages courtesy of three home wins over United, FC Copenhagen and Benfica.

Strachan admitted his disappointment at their defeat in Ukraine but insists there is still a long way to go.

He said: “There is no way I am criticising the players, I am proud of the way they performed this season.

“We can still bounce back from this – we did it last season.

“The defeat doesn’t make it any easier but we lost our first game last season and we had qualified before the last game had been played.”

Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu insists he was vindicated in his pre-match praise of Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc, who had an outstanding match for the visitors.

Lucescu reckoned his side could have scored six if it had not been for the Poland international.

He said: “I said before the game that Artur Boruc would be the one player that I would take and you could see why tonight. He played very well against us.

“Celtic improved in the second half but 2-0 didn’t show the game, we had much more opportunities than Celtic and it could have been 6-2.

“I emphasised to my players that we had to have a moment at the beginning of the game, a corner or something, to get Celtic defending and then our technique would take over and that’s what happened.”
