Jean Alesi could be on the brink of a surprise move from Prost to Jordan in time for the Hungarian Grand Prix in three weeks’ time.
Jordan are refusing to confirm or deny the rumours that swept through the paddock yesterday either side of the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
But in the wake of Heinz-Harald Frentzen’s sacking on Wednesday, which left team boss Eddie Jordan a castigated figure in the eyes of many German fans throughout the weekend, veteran Alesi looks set to be given the chance to resurrect his career.
The 37-year-old has effectively been in the Formula One wilderness for the last four seasons following his heady days with Ferrari and Benetton.
But two dismal seasons with a then uncompetitive Sauber team in 1998 and 1999 have been followed by an even more miserable time with Prost, although Alesi has at least picked up four points this year in stark contrast to a blank 2000.
Jordan is apparently ready to turn to Alesi after test driver Ricardo Zonta failed to justify his elevation to the team as Frentzen’s replacement at Hockenheim.
