Clarke to start for Armagh

Armagh will have the fit-again Ronan Clarke at full-forward when they take on Ulster rivals Down for the Allianz NFL Division 2 title at Croke Park on Sunday (throw-in 2pm).

Armagh will have the fit-again Ronan Clarke at full-forward when they take on Ulster rivals Down for the Allianz NFL Division 2 title at Croke Park on Sunday (throw-in 2pm).

Two-time All-Star forward Clarke is the only change to the Armagh side that thumped Donegal 2-16 to 0-6 last time out.

Clarke, who scored a point as a substitute against Donegal, has been troubled by an Achilles problem. Armagh manager and Down native Paddy O'Rourke will be hoping he can get back to full fitness for Armagh's Ulster Championship preliminary round clash with Derry on May 16.

O'Rourke was particularly pleased with how his side finished off the league phase by overwhelming Donegal.

He has resisted the temptation to tinker with the side that roared to victory in Letterkenny, with Clarke's promotion at Tony Kernan's expense the only switch.

Elsewhere, Barry Shannon will continue at left corner back, getting the nod over Martin Ferris, and the influential Ciaran McKeever holds onto the centre-back berth.

Charlie Vernon, Aaron Kernan and Gareth Swift with power the Orchard county's attack on the forty, with Tony and Paul Kernan and Malachy Mackin among the substitutes.

Down beat Armagh 1-13 to 1-6 when the sides met in Newry in March, in a game in which the talismanic Steven McDonnell notched 1-3 for the Orchard men.

McDonnell and company gained five wins during the seven-match league run to secure second place in the table and promotion to Division 1.

Meanwhile, Armagh boss O'Rourke has added five players to his panel for the fast-approaching Championship season.

Old hands Martin O'Rourke and Enda McNulty have surprisingly earned recalls to the county set-up, with Under-21 players Paul McKeown, Jamie Clarke and Francis Hanratty also receiving call-ups.

Commenting on the squad additions, Paddy O'Rourke said: "They will strengthen the squad, but none of them will take any part this weekend. They will all become available by the Championship.

"Obviously we talked about what we felt the panel needed for the Championship and we felt that these players were guys who would add something.

"It's an open-ended panel and other players might join, but they are the ones we feel will give us that extra strength going into the Championship."

ARMAGH (NFL v Down): Paul Hearty; Andy Mallon, Brendan Donaghy, Barry Shannon; Paul Duffy, Ciaran McKeever, Finnian Moriarty; James Lavery, Kieran Toner; Charlie Vernon, Aaron Kernan, Gareth Swift; Brian Mallon, Ronan Clarke, Steven McDonnell.
