The new A1 Grand Prix championship has postponed the forthcoming round at Sentul in Indonesia following the death of Dubai’s ruler.

Emir of Dubai Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum died aged 62 on a visit to Australia.

The A1GP series was conceived and paid for by another member of Dubai’s ruling family, Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum, whose father was a cousin of the Emir.

With 40 days of mourning declared in Dubai, the series has opted to postpone the races scheduled for January 15, with no replacement date yet agreed by organisers.

A1GP chief executive Tony Teixeira said: “The entire staff, team owners and associates of the A1 Grand Prix family mourn the loss of a great visionary and benevolent ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

“While difficult logistically, we felt it important to observe a respectable period of mourning for this beloved family member of our founder, president and chairman, Sheikh Maktoum.

“Condolences and sympathies are respectfully offered to all the people of Dubai.”
