New US Open champion Michael Campbell has decided to play only one event - next week’s European Open at the K Club – prior to the Open at St Andrews.
The UK-based New Zealander pulled out of this week’s French Open the moment he won at Pinehurst on Sunday and is to skip the Scottish Open in a fortnight’s time as well.
He was runner-up to Thomas Levet last July.
There could be a second big-name withdrawal from Loch Lomond, with world number three Ernie Els – twice a winner there – left the US Open and revealed he could take a three-week break.
