The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has paid tribute to his former mentor Charles Haughey, whose death was announced this morning.

The 80-year-old former Taoiseach died at his Abbeville mansion in north Dublin following a lengthy battle with prostate cancer and a heart condition.

Mr Ahern said today that he learned of Mr Haughey's passing with "great sadness", saying it "marks the passing of an era".

He said Mr Haughey made a huge impact on Irish life over his time in politics, had "an immense ability to get things done" and served with distinction in every ministerial position he held.

Mr Ahern said the former Taoiseach provided tremendous leadership and would be remembered for his role in establishing social partnership and laying the foundations for the peace process in the North.

He said Mr Haughey would also be fondly remembered for introducing tax-free status for artists and for promoting regional airports, Temple Bar, the Irish Financial Services Centre and the bloodstock industry.

Mr Ahern also said he believed the historical judgement of the former Taoiseach would be a positive one, despite the revelations about Mr Haughey's widespread financial irregularities.
