Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson is excited by the challenge of adapting Alice Sebold's novel The Lovely Bones for the big screen, because he knows it will be unlike anything he's attempted before.
Jackson is relishing a return to gritty drama after working on fantasy movies - the Lord of the Rings trilogy and forthcoming remake King Kong - for years.
The 43-year-old says: "You think, on one hand, wow, this would be an amazing movie. Your second thought is how incredibly difficult it would be to make it into a film. It was the difficult part that really excited me.
"I felt the challenge with Kong was obviously very similar to Rings to create a very realistic fantasy environment with real characters. But The Lovely Bones is something completely different.
"It needs to feel like it's not directed by me - for me to come up with a different vocabulary and a way of telling the story on film."
Meanwhile, eager King Kong fans have been given a sneak peek of the forthcoming movie remake months before it hits screens, with a special internet video diary.
On Kongisking.net, film-maker Peter Jackson provides a video diary and other behind-the-scenes glimpses of the epic, which stars Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody.
The movie, which is currently being filmed in New Zealand, opens on December 14.
