The head of the Health Service Executive, Brendan Drumm has said they have to accept responsibility for the circumstances surrounding Patrick Walsh's death.

But, Mr Drumm said what happened to the 75-year-old should not be turned into a political blame game.

Mr Walsh, who was suffering from a burst ulcer, died after he was refused admission to a series of hospitals in the north east.

It was later revealed that an intensive care bed was vacant at Cavan hospital when the elderly man was transferred there.

The HSE are expected to release an official statement later today.
