Glistening, who has not enjoyed the best of luck so far this season, has been installed as the 6-1 favourite by the sponsors for the totesport Ebor at York on August 23.
The Luca Cumani-trained four-year-old, allotted 8st 12lb in the prestigious handicap, came within a whisker of landing the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot after being heavily backed beforehand.
“Glistening has won just one race from eight career starts, but looked really unlucky last time at Royal Ascot and also the time before at Epsom,” said totesport spokesman Damian Walker.
“The gamble on him at the Royal meeting only just went astray and we’re taking no chances with him in the Ebor given the trainer’s fine record.”
John Gosden’s Signatory (8st 11lb) is next-best in the betting at 12-1, while Cumani, who has saddled the winner twice in the past seven years, could also call on the lightly-raced Futun (7st 13lb).
Alan Swinbank’s tough and consistent Ouninpohja topped a predictably strong entry of 85 following the publication of the weights.
The Imperial Ballet gelding landed a five-timer last season but has failed to get his head in front so far this term, filling the runner-up berth on all four of his racecourse appearances.
He will shoulder 9st 10lb, with David Elsworth’s Balkan Knight and the Jamie Osborne-trained Geordieland next in the list on 9st 8lb.
Toldo could bid to tread the same path as Sergeant Cecil did last year having won the Northumberland Plate at the start of the month, and he could renew rivalry with Peter Chapple-Hyam’s River Alhaarth, who is now 4lb better off for his neck defeat at Newcastle.
Other interesting possibles at this early stage include Godolphin’s Sunday Symphony, Michael Jarvis’ Old Newton Cup hero Consular and 2004 runner-up Gold Ring.
